The first Haitian Orchestra Institute became a reality in March of 2017 in Jacmel, Haiti. Seventeen Utah Symphony members and Maestro Fischer offered an intensive week of lessons, sectionals, rehearsals, and pedagogy training to 100 aspiring young musicians from throughout Haiti. The week was a great success, culminating in a performance by the HOI orchestra led by Maestro Fischer in movements of Beethoven’s Symphony No. 5, Schuberts’ Unfinished Symphony, Bizet’s Carmen and Grieg’s Peer Gynt.
Haitian Conductor Canes Nicolas was Assistant Conductor, and conducted a Haitian selection as well. The free concert was held at a church in Jacmel and was well attended by community members.
The beautiful town of Jacmel is situated on the south coast of Haiti. The architectural influences of Spanish and French colonial styles are still very apparent here, with cobblestone streets and wrought iron balconies. Jacmel is known today as a Haitian arts center with a thriving visual arts and craft scene.
Jacmel's Dessaix-Baptiste Music School currently serves an astounding 1160 students. Home to five bands, three orchestras, two jazz bands and a children's choir, the Dessaix-Baptiste school offers lessons on all instruments as there are teachers available.
